Amavasai

Amavasai is the first tithi, or the first day in the waxing and waning of the Moon's passage. Tithi is a Sanskrit word meaning distance. It is the distance between the Sun and Moon in the galaxy. The Moon is invisible on Amavasya. Even though considered a good day, auspicious events like marriages are not conducted on that day. Like avoiding Amavasai, people also avoid a month, on which occur two Amavasai. This is called Malamasam. Malamasam occurs approximately once every 18 years. Chaturdasi, the day before and Prathamai tithi that comes a day after Amavasai are also considered inauspicious days. New activities are not conducted on these days, because it is believed that any new activity may run into trouble with loss, enmity and disease as a result.

Baby born on Amavasai

It is believed that if a baby is born on the Amavasai tithi, the parents should perform shanti ceremony for the baby. Otherwise, the baby may choose the wrong path in life as an adult, as indicated in the book Shanti Kusumakaram.

Why auspicious activities have to be avoided on Amavasai

On the day of Amavasai, the Sun and the Moon are in line with themselves and both the planets are placed in the same rasi. The magnetic force of these two planets are at their highest on this day. This may influence the human minds in a manner that is unknown to us. Anyone that has seen the rough waves during the new moon day can understand this. So, beginning any new activity may be avoided on the this day.

Ideal for meditation

Because of the powerful Sun and the Moon on the day, the Amavasya tithi is considered ideal for meditation.
