Purnima or pournami is the full moon day. All Pournamis are special for the Indian populace. Pournami days are generally considered important for Goddess Shakti worship. Devotees of the Goddess pray her by chanting the Sahasranamam, thirisathi, ashtothram, devi mahatmyam and so on. Devotional songs are sung in praise of the mother Goddess.

The Pournami that occurs in the Adi month is called Vyasa jayanthi. It is the day that is celebrated as Guru Purnima.

The Guru Purnima or Guru Pournami is considered a day for Guru worship. Dakshinamurthi, an element of Siva is prayed upon specially on this day. When the prayers are performed properly, it is believed that the blessings of the Guru will fall upon the devotee.

The chin mudra is used by the Lord Dhakshinamurthi in his meditative pose. It is a symbol that eradicates pride, jealousy, maya from the minds of the devotees.

In the Indian culture, Guru or the teacher forms a major part in the life of a man. It is in fact the Guru's blessings that helps one take that another step towards God realization. So, Guru purnima is an important festival that is celebrated by Hindus all over the world
