Nagas play an important part in Hindu culture. One special naga is Vasuki, Ananthan and other nagas are a part of the deities in the Hindu culture.
The naga panchami falls on the month of Adi month. Devotees undertake the naga panchami viratham on the panchami day of the Adi month. It is believed that the Lord Narayana protects Earth under the guise of Anantha the serpent.
In tamil culture, it is normal to see devotees pouring milk over the snake pit.
On the naga panchami day, women do puja to the naga devata using milk, honey, flowers and payasam. It is believed that this puja benefits the family, the kids, husband and brothers who will be blessed with long life.
This naga panchami is also celebrated as garuda panchami. It is good the pray Garuda, the son of sage Kashyapa on the day of naga panchami. It is believed that those who pray Garuda, will have healthy and strong offspring.
