Vasant Panchami is the first and more minor of two spring-themed festivals in Hindu culture. These days, Vasant Panchami day is associated with Goddess Saraswati, the deity that the source of all wisdom, including the knowledge of fine arts and science. The Goddess Saraswati is prayed upon and the day is treated by devotees as Saraswati's birthday. People worship Goddess Saraswati on this day to acquire knowledge and to get rid of negative qualities that are a hindrance in progress.

Vasant Panchami falls on the fifth day of the waxing moon in the month of Magham. It is celebrated differently in different parts of India, as Saraswati Puja in the east, Sri Panchami in parts of Bengal and so on. It is compared with the Chinese New Year and the Christian Candlemas. The 40 days between Vasant Panchami and Holi is sometimes compared to the Lenten season.
