This temple is one of the 108 Divyadesam. The place has the reputation of being the birth place of Saint Tirupanazhwar one among the celebrated 12 Vaishanavite saints. This area was ruled by the Chola Kings. King Nanga was praying to the lord for child boon. Mahalakshmi was sent by the Lord Perumal to be born as the daughter to the king. Mahalakshmi took the form of a baby and floated on a lotus flower. During hunting King Nanga Chola was very happy to see the baby floating on a lotus flower and named the child Kamalavalli (born in lotus). When the girl attained the age of marriage she saw Lord Ranganatha while he was riding a horse and she wanted to only get married to him. King Nanga Chola dreamed the Lord Perumal himself come and say that we wants to marry Kamalavalli. The King took his daughter to Srirangam where she was joined with Lord Perumal and the King built a temple for Kamalavalli Nachiar
